The plastic bag debate continues to be a big debate in the United States. Many people have learned that all of the used plastic bags end up in nature and often interferes with the lives of wild animals. Many activities are trying to get a ban on these plastic bags in hopes of improving the lives of animals – and people – but it sounds like it could be a big battle. Many people say they care about the environment, but continue to get plastic bags while grocery shopping. Many efforts have been made in removing the plastic bags by creating reusable bags, but plastic bags remain a big issue.
Plastic Bag Debate: Should Plastic Bags Be Banned for Good?
According to a new CBS report from Feb. 10, the plastic bag debate continues now, even years later, and it sounds like not much has changed. Unfortunately, the plastic bag industry in the U.S. is a huge business, and it sounds like it isn’t about change anytime soon. According to a research report, “the more than 3,300 companies that make up the nation’s wholesale paper bag and disposable plastic product sector brought in $69.5 billion in revenue last year.”
It is expected that more protests will be brought into light over the next couple of years, but the business keeps growing. But many states are starting to take action against the plastic bags. Dallas is considering banning plastic bags after Los Angeles did it recently. Los Angeles “became the biggest U.S. city to ban single-use plastic bags, while charging 10 cents for each paper carryout bag sold to a customer,” according to the report
“We use up over 2 billion plastic bags a year in L.A. alone,” City Councilman Paul Koretz has revealed about the city’s usage of plastic bags. “It’s such a great source of litter, it causes a lot of harm to our rivers and our oceans.”
Do you think plastic bags should be banned?
