Fake cops dupe courier boys of nearly Rs 6 crore jewels

MUMBAI: Four men posed as police personnel and duped a group of jewellery courier boys of valuables worth crores after "intercepting them for rash driving" at Bandra (W) on Thursday. The police are hunting for these crooks, two of whom were in khaki.

The complainant, Amit Soni, is a manager at Sai courier services in Mumbai. Soni and three of his colleagues-Khushbuddin, Ajay Sharma and Narendra Saini-were supposed to deliver 60 packets of jewels to the domestic airport at Santa Cruz. The consignment was worth between Rs 3 crore and Rs 6 crore. Soni and his colleagues left his Kalbadevi-based office around 10.15pm on Thursday in his Maruti Swift. The consignment was stacked in the vehicle's boot. It was to be uploaded into the airport cargo and dispatched to Delhi, Jaipur and Chennai.

The group reached Bandra around 10.45pm. "The Swift had just crossed the Mahim Causeway and was on the stretch below the Bandra flyover when a taxi waylaid them. There were four men in the taxi-one dressed as a sub-inspector and another as a constable. They had hired the taxi at Haji Ali and there's a possibility that they were stalking the accused throughout," said a police official.

The accused shouted at Soni's colleague-who was at the wheel of the Swift-for driving rashly. They told Soni and his colleagues that they had to come to Kherwadi police station for questioning. "Soni and his colleagues pleaded that they be allowed to make a phone call to their boss. But the accused snatched their phones and forced them to get out and sit in the taxi. One of the accused, who was in uniform, sat in the taxi's front seat. Two other accused occupied the Swift while the fourth accused took an autorickshaw," a police official said.

Soni and his colleagues were under the impression that they were being taken to Kherwadi police station. But when the taxi reached the Bandra magistrate court, the uniformed accused got off on the pretext of making a phone call. He never returned. The other accused in the Swift and auto also vanished. Soni and his colleagues realized they had been conned. They approached the Kherwadi police, then the Nirmal Nagar police and finally Bandra police where an FIR was registered. Police later found the Swift abandoned at Sion and are trying to find out who its owner is. "Two of the accused had changed into uniforms inside the taxi. We will question the cabbie," an official said.
