Vadodara sees highest polling percentage jump

AHMEDABAD: The final figure of voter turnout for the 26 Lok Sabha seats in Gujarat has been put at 63.31 — up 15.41% from the 2009 figure of 47.90%. Polling took place on Wednesday.

The surprise package were the tribal-dominated seats of south and central Gujarat which recorded more than 70% polling — with Bardoli leading at 74.59%. This is followed by Bharuch (74.54%), Valsad (74.09%) and Chhota Udepur (71.15%).

Vadodara, chief minister Narendra Modi's seat, came fifth at 70.57% but recorded the highest jump of 21.55% over the 2009 figure of 49.02%. Apart from the presence of Modi in the field, the massive jump in Vadodara is being attributed to innovative methods adopted by BJP's campaign in-charge and minister of state Saurabh Patel who involved the civil society at large, apart from BJP cadres, in the mobilisation of voters.

The highest turnout in any parliamentary election in Gujarat is being interpreted as being advantageous to BJP.  Pradeep Shukla                                                              PGDM 2 sem
