Govt moves SC for more auto permits
NEW
DELHI: Even as the transport department is in the process of allotting
around 45,000 new autorickshaw permits, it has moved the Supreme Court
to allow it to make 3 lakh permits available in the city.
The
number of auto permits required is based on the premise that around 20
autos are needed every 1,000 persons. The transport department claims
cities like Mumbai and Chennai have over 2.5 lakh autos functioning for a
much smaller population.
Of the 45,000 new auto permits
allowed by the Supreme Court, 20,000 have already been allotted for the
general category, said sources in the department. Another 15,000 are
also being allotted for the reserved category, with around 5,500 for NCR
autos. "The court has been asked to allow the department to give out
more permits, bringing the total to over 3 lakh," said the official. The
logic is that cities like Mumbai and Chennai also have a large auto
population to keep pace with the demand.
The Delhi government
had not been able to allot around 15,000 auto permits that had been
slotted in the first batch of 55,000 permits that the SC had given
permission for. "The influx of more autos will automatically act as a
deterrent against overcharging and refusals," said a senior government
official.
