Country will be ruined with riots if Modi becomes Prime Minister: Mayawati

AURANGABAD: In a scathing attack on the BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, BSP chief Mayawati on Sunday said if Modi came to power, the country would "stand ruined with communal riots". Mayawati was conducting her first rally in Marathwada at Aurangabad's Aam-Khas grounds.

BSP candidates contesting on the party ticket from all eight seats of the Marathwada region participated in the rally in Aurangabad.

Addressing a large gathering, Mayawati, in her 38-minute address, came down heavily on the Congress and the BJP, especially the latter. "The BJP's PM candidate, being the chief minister of Gujarat, had brought communal riots to his own state in 2002. If he becomes the prime minister, the entire country would stand ruined with communal violence," Mayawati said. Mayawati slammed the Samajwadi Party for failing to check communal riots in Muzaffarnagar and said, "In my four tenures of chief ministership, no Hindu-Muslim riots ever took place."

The former Uttar Pradesh CM also warned that if the BJP comes to power, it may scrap reservations altogether. "The BJP is claiming that if their party gets back to power, they will change the country. My question is, why had nothing changed in the country when the BJP was in power for about six years?" she asked.  SHYAM KISHOR SINGH                    \             \
