CBI hands over fresh list of 'missing’ files to AG

NEW DELHI: The CBI has given the exact file numbers of the missing files — related to the coal block allocations during PM Manmohan Singh's tenure as the coal minister between 2006 and 2009 — to Attorney General G E Vahanvati on Tuesday to prevent the coal ministry from misleading the Coalgate probe.

Agency sources say that the number of files sought by them in the fresh list is less than 225 files/documents — as required earlier — but exact specifications would help the coal ministry to reply at the earliest.

The fresh list has sought the files/documents related to 26th, 35th and 36th screening committees, applications of 157 companies that had made a beeline for 45 coal blocks between 1993 and 2005 and presentation and feedback forms submitted by two private firms for the allocation of the Lohara East coal block (Maharashtra) and the Thesgora-B/Rudrapuri coal block (Madhya Pradesh) before the screening panel.

Also, the fresh list has sought important communication between the coal ministry and certain states regarding allocations to companies like Naveen Jindal's JSPL, Vijay Darda's firm and Navbharat Power.

CBI sources said that the original figure of 225 files had been whittled down after a meeting with coal ministry officials in which it was found that some of the records sought by the agency were available in a different set of files.

Holding that the missing documents were 'vital' to the probe, the Supreme Court had directed coal ministry to file an FIR with the CBI if it ultimately failed to trace any of the documents sought by the agency.

Complying with the SC directives, a meeting between CBI and coal ministry officials was held on Monday for an elaborate discussion on the files in question.
