Seven killed in cracker unit blast
KANPUR: Seven persons, including children and women, died in a powerful explosion at a house-cum-firework unit at Pakra village near Mohan in Hasanganj in Unnao district on Thursday. Five persons were injured.
The injured persons were initially admitted at community health centre, from where they were rushed to Trauma Centre in Lucknow in a critical condition.
Pakra village in Mohan is known for firework units.
The powerful blast led to razing down of 'kaccha' (mud) structure belonging to Mohammad Naim Khan alias Chhotey Munna. It also damaged three neighbouring houses. It is estimated that a huge stock of explosives were piled up for manufacturing firecrackers inside the house. The death toll was confirmed after the removal of debris. "There was a huge explosion at around 4.20 pm and five members of Mohd Naim's family present in the house, besides a teenaged girl from neighbourhood, died at the spot, while one died on way to Trauma Centre in Lucknow," a senior police official said while talking to TOI. Crackers and unfinished goods were strewn all over the site.
Officials claimed that the death toll was likely to increase as the injured were in an extremely critical condition. There were nearly ten persons inside the house when the incident took place.
Saleha alias Munni (42), wife of unit owner Mohammad Naim Khan, his daughter Sana (9), sons Irfan (33) Irshad (17) and Imran (15), daughter-in-law Pammi Bano (25) and Sufiya (19) daughter of his neighbour Rafeeq Qadri died in the blast.
Mohammad Naim Khan (45), his mother Mustaqeem (65) and two other relatives were injured.
"The fireworks unit has been running for the past few months. It is being verified whether it was registered or not," circle officer Charan Singh said.
Sources said that the unit was working overtime to deliver crackers to nearby areas as Diwali is approaching.
The villagers rushed to the spot and found severed body parts strewn across the site.
The residents informed police control room. Superintendent of police Sonia Singh and other police officials rushed to the site.
Fire tenders and JCB machines from Unnao reached there and took over the rescue operations. A case has been registered in this connection.
The SP said that a probe would be conducted. "The spot had been sealed and we have sought assistance from forensic team to ascertain the cause of the blast and about the nature of explosives. The bodies have been sent for postmortem examination," the SP said.
