PM to dedicate National Thermal Power Corporation power project to nation today

RAIPUR: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will dedicate the ambitious 2980 MW having three units of 660 MW and two units of 500 MW state-run National Thermal Power Corporation(NTPC) - Sipat super thermal power station to the nation in Bilaspur district of Chhattisgarh on Thursday.

He will also lay the foundation stone for the NTPC power project in Lara village of Raigarh district. This would be the first project of country's largest power producer to be built with super critical technology. The project would have five units of 800 MW each. Singh will lay the foundation stone for the stage-1 of the project comprising two units through remote operation system from Sipat in Bilaspur district.

NTPC's western region II, NTPC Sipat generates 2980 MW electricity and powers the states of Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, J & K, Daman & Diu and also Dadra & Nagar Haveli.

The Lara project will give an additional 1600 MW to the nation's energy requirement on its commissioning. As per the MoU signed between Chhattisgarh government and the NTPC on July 12, 2009, Chhattisgarh will be getting 50% of the generated power and the remaining 50% will be shared by other states- Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Daman and Diu as also Dadar and Nagar Haveli. The estimated cost of this 1600 MW stage I of the project is put at Rs 11,741 crore.

State Governor, Shekhar Dutt, chief minister, Raman Singh, Union minister of state for power (independent charge) Jyotiraditya M Scindia, Union minister of state for agriculture and food processing industries, Charan Das Mahant, former chief minister of Madhya Pradesh and member of Parliament, Motilal Vora and Vishnu Deo Sai, former chief minister of Chhattisgarh, Ajit Jogi, member of legislative assembly, PK Sinha, secretary (power), Govt of India, chief secretary, Govt. of Chhattisgarh, Sunil Kumar, and CMD, NTPC, Dr Arup Roy Choudhury, and other state officials will attend the programme.
