32 killed in Assam road accident
GUWAHATI: Thirty-two people, including 12 children, were killed when a goods-laden truck hit two mini buses travelling in Assam's Barpeta district early on Thursday. The victims were labourers who were travelling with their family from Haripur, Hatimura and Khulukhuli villages in Dhubri district to Rangiya for working in brick kilns.

Police said they had retrieved 27 bodies from accident spot on the National Highway-31 at Dahalpara under Sorbhog police station. Five others died in different hospitals of Barpeta and Guwahati. Another 13 are still battling for life at Fakruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College at Barpeta and Guwahati Medical College and Hospital here.

"The whole area was strewn with bodies of men, women and children. The injured were writhing in pain when we arrived at the spot. The two mini buses were hit by a 10-wheeler truck coming from the opposite direction at a high speed," a police officer said.

Police are yet to ascertain the exact cause of the collision. Some reports said truck was moving on the wrong lane since the other part of the 4-lane highway was blocked for traffic due to construction work.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi, who happened to be in Barpeta, visited the Barpeta Medical College to enquire about the injured victims. He announced an ex gratia of Rs 1 lakh to the families of each of those killed and Rs 50,000 for each of the injured.
