Rahul Gandhi Stepping into His Mother’s Shoes?

In Mom's Shoes: Rahul Gandhi
In Mom's Shoes: Rahul Gandhi
Rahul Gandhi, General Secretary of Indian National Congress, is likely to step into the shoes of his mother Sonia Gandhi. The Economic Times reported that he is set to become the next Congress party chief within a few weeks.
The report said several party leaders, including a cabinet minister, had confirmed the handover is likely in "four to eight weeks". After Rahul takes over, his mom Sonia will restrict her role to giving broad directions to the party and government, the report added.
The Nehru-Gandhi family political dynasty has no other equivalent in the world, combining the birthright of royalty with the tragic glamour of the Kennedy clan. A member of the family has been in charge of India for more than two-thirds of the period since independence from Britain in 1947.
But Rahul Gandhi's apparent ascendancy, and uncertain leadership qualities, has raised questions about whether a family political dynasty is compatible with a modern democracy. In September, Reuters interviewed Congress party officials and family friends, some of whom have talked to the media for the first time. They revealed deep concerns about the future of the Gandhi dynasty.
Rahul's taking over as Congress president, if and when it happens, will come at a time when thent is battling high inflation, corruption scandals and slowing growth. Is this the right move for the ruling CongresS

Indian Squad Retained for 2nd Test: No Place for Harbhajan

India selectors have retained their 15-man squad for the second test against West Indies in Kolkata; that means there is no place for off-spinner Harbhajan Singh.
The 31-year-old, who has taken more than 400 test wickets, struggled in England where India were whitewashed 4-0 in the test series. He was also dropped from last month's one-day squad for the 5-0 home victory over England.
Debutant off-spinner Ravichadran Ashwin took nine wickets while left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha took seven in the first test in Delhi to keep Harbhajan on the sidelines.
India won the test by five wickets on Wednesday to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Kolkata hosts the second test from Nov. 14, while the third starts on Nov. 22 in Mumbai.
Squad: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (captain), Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Ajinkya Rahane, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Vangipurappu Laxman, Yuvraj Singh, Ravichandran Ashwin, Pragyan Ojha, Rahul Sharma, Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, Virat Kohli, Varun Aaron.

Maruti in Trouble: 60 Percent Fall in Q2 Profit

Maruti Suzuki, India's top automobile manufacturer, posted a larger-than-expected 60 percent fall in its quarterly profit. The company has been hit by labour unrest, rising interest rates and vehicle costs that has hurt demand in Asia's third-largest economy.
Maruti, a company in which Japan's Suzuki Motor Corp owns 54.2 percent, said last week it had resolved labour unrest issues at its plant in north India; a problem that crippled production and sent sales tumbling.
On Saturday, the company said that net profit in its fiscal second quarter that finished on Sept. 30, dropped to Rs. 2.40 billion ($49 million) from Rs. 5.98 billion reported in the same period a year ago.
Shares in Maruti, which has a market value of $6.6 billion, have fallen nearly 21 percent this year, in line with a similar fall in rival Tata Motors' shares but more than a 13 percent drop in the Mumbai market.
